Teaching You How To Fish

Teaching You How To Fish

Two very good friends that I met when I was associated with the Joel Goldsmith Infinite Way groups years ago put this question to me:

“How do you compare Joel Goldsmith’s “Infinite Way” teachings to those of William Samuel?

As I see it,

Joel Goldsmith feeds you the fish

There was a teacher, healer/practitioner/student relationship and classes in different venues, producing audio tapes ad infinitum.  When I left "The Infinite Way" I had boxes and boxes and more boxes of books and audiotapes -  cassette tapes.  I had ventured to many classes, including annual trips to L.A. and three to five day seminars and classes at various other locations.

Healing  of the cares and woes of daily life was the work of “practitioners”.  One of the above mentioned friends had become deserving of being called a “healer”.

I was with the group for quite a few years until one of these two friends passed me a book by William Samuel entitled “The Awareness of Self Discovery”.  This book made my heart sing.  I tried to trace William Samuel who by this time had made his transition.  Eventually I was led to Sandy Jones who is the executor of William Samuel's work. We soon became friends and she was my mentor.

William Samuel teaches you how to fish

Quote: " Well, listener, listen to this, see if there is any truth in this statement. The value in any message of truth is in direct proportion to that message's insistence that we turn within and discover for one's self the message, the divine identity that has ever been all one is. The honesty of any truth message, be it Buddah  or Goldsmith or Jesus, or Sambo's or the board of director's or the pope's or the president's, lies in the statement that the truth is in one's self and IS one's Self.

...We were talking bout the honest message, the honest truth message. The honest truth message, as we said, lies in one that turns one to discover himself within, one that turns one within where the real discoveries are made, to turn within to the secret place, to the holy of holies, to the Shekinah and there find the true message.
The beauty of such a message, it seems to me, lies in its fulfilling the function of way showing, but doing it void of theory, void of speculation or commentary and it's a message that doesn't bind the seeker, it doesn't induce guilt nor encourage the veneration of the messenger or the messenger's words. The childlikeness of such a message encourages one to find the beauty and power and the wonder of his own words and to express the discovered life within. Such is the work the Child does.
The place is within. The place is within, within Consciousness, the place is within this very Awareness that listens to these words. It is not in any scientific metaphysical system and it isn't in the semantic games we play with the words of others. If, as is the case with nearly all organized theology, the message speaks primarily of healing and demonstrations and of altered states of consciousness, and all of those peripheral events, such a message can be as stultifying and misleading as it is helpful. Therefore, it isn't worthy of identity.
Ultimately, we have done with following the messages of others to become the finder or our own Messiahship, we find our own message. Salvation lies in this action and in no other. The first freedom and the last freedom lie in self-discovery. That discovery is immaculate, untouched by anyone else. It is a virgin discovery and recognition of deity within and without. Any message that has one following a personal leader or teacher for anything longer than is absolutely necessary to find the authority that one himself is, is a distorting, thwarting teacher.
I'm not saying that we don't follow the instructions of others, that we don't read or listen to others, that's what we're doing right now, for goodness sakes, but the ones to listen to are the ones who tell us that the messenger lies within and that we go there to find it. Those who speak of levels of awareness, of states and stages of consciousness, of spiritual hierarchies, as though they were outside one's very own awareness right here and now, are liars from the beginning. Their teachings confuse the world with false hope and robe the innocent with false pretence. We are done with that to find the word that is nigh thee, even in thy mouth and in thy heart.

Oh boy, there are many messengers abroad on the land. The one to heed is the one who says to look for one's own messenger within, and then this, that's all-important...and then makes it plain on the tables precisely how this is done for one's self. And listen, listen, those qualified to do this use their own words, they don't give you backing-up references from 100 other sources to try to prove their words to you. They use their own words and they tell you their own story, which they have lived, and their own story is the proof of their word."

“I will put My Law in their mind and write it in their hearts.  And I will be their God and they shall be my people.”  (The Bible)

William Samuel shares the wisdom of his Child Heart and admonishes all to do likewise.

How to Fish:  (William Samuel)

   CHILD EQUALS HEART EQUALS SOUL,
     THE OVERLOOKED SIMPLICITY

I have never talked heart to heart with a single person who hasn’t admitted that the child was still there within him--struggling perhaps, or a distant dream from the past, but still there.  All of us continue to dream dreams and wonder about soft things.  The heart of us still goes leaping through the high places of imagination occasionally and soars with the high flying swallows to see the far side of the moon.  That is the Child at work.  Yes, the Child still lives.

Moreover, this inner one, the old new Child of us, is healthy and well, absolutely all right in every way.  None of the enthusiasm has been dulled by the years.  Its eyesight is as sharp as an eagle’s.  Its hearing keen as a puppy’s, and all the feelings of youth are pounding with excitement exactly as they did when we were children-children, unencumbered by the world.

Much has been said about the “heart” of us.  Great theological positions have been established around “the immortal soul.”  Reader, listen with that heart of yourself for a minute.  The little child of us, the heart of us and the souls of us are the Same One. Whatever we have come to perceive with the heart has been a recognition of that eternal Child within.  And now, as I write of that One, I address the heart, the soul with which we are all concerned.  Oh, yes, the heart and soul of us--the Child--is still right here quite capable of confirming Itself, evidencing Itself and revitalizing our view of everything.

As the years pass and the world encroaches relentlessly, we lose sight of this Original Nature or Identity except as an old photograph or a memory etched somewhere in an inaccessible past.  It comes as a surprise to hear that the Original Child and all Its feelings are still around;  then it comes as a wonderment to learn first hand that they are not inaccessible at all, but still right here, closer than breathing, closer than fingers and toes.

THERE IS AN AGELESS MYSTERY IN OUR ABILITY TO FIND IDENTITY

As one read these words about the Child, the heart knows this is the truth, a truth hidden all these years in simplicity and childlikeness that we have left behind.  When we are alone, we still play the child’s game.  While we are walking or driving or puttering with the pots, there is some little something we do in the mind’s eye exactly as we did as a child.  There are ships and ports and storms at sea when we wash the dishes or take a bath.  Don’t tell me you don’t know what I’m talking about.  Deep inside, you do.  You see, I am the child, too--the same Child--and I have become It again.  I know, by God, by the grace of God, what I’m writing about here.  And I know that the first step in feeling the joys of the Real (as we did as children) is to acknowledge that the Original Nature of us hasn’t left us.

THE HISTORIC CHRIST AND THE CHILD

Bill, are you saying that the early church substituted the historic Jesus for the Child?”

No.  Churchdom has limited  the Christ to the historic Jesus, and all of that has been done for a divine purpose the church seems to know little or nothing about.  Everything that has happened is by God’s grace.  The historic Christ-in-linear-time came, as all luminaries, to confirm our own subjective Self-discovery.  The historic Chris is the first begotten of the Father in world time, and the original believers had that straight.  The discovery of the Child within is confirmed by the Bible and its accounts of the historic Christ and his role on earth.  The Child I Am and you are “comes” to us as the second coming, as Messiah re-discovered within, for whom the Bible and Jesus are the first or external confirmation.

“Are you saying that the Child is the Christ also?

Yes! Yes!  Exactly that.  “Closer than breathing.  Exactly as the historic Christ said.  He would never leave us nor forsake us.  He has been here as the Child of us from the beginning.  Our very Child-Selfhood--which seems to go away from us and returns to us, rediscovered.

“William, tell me if this is what I’ve heard you saying these past few days:  the Child within is the same historic Christ?”

Yes, History, like all other things is subjective.  To rediscover the Child is to find what Jesus found, lived and confirmed before he began his ministry.  When the historic Christ said he would be back again, he meant that each one who understood what he was saying would find the Child within and recognize THAT SELF HIMSELF as the Messiah written in the heart, the “second coming” in actual fact.

“Are you also saying that when I was a child on earth, I was that Christ-Child?”

Yes, spiritually.  And I’m saying that everyone can prove the truth of this for himself by finding that all the acute feelings of the Original Nature which were present in us as children are capable of returning to us again.

“You know theology isn’t going to agreee with that, William?”

Perhaps neither theology nor the subjective groups, but all who feel the Child within themselves will agree, because they will KNOW it is the Truth, having proven it for themselves.  And when the theologians begin to perceive that this is indeed what is meant by the New Covenant “written in the heart,” they will slowly, grudgingly give way, even those powerful conservatives so intent on going back to Biblical literalism.  Not without argument.  Not without doubt.  Not without questioning those who have found the Child of themselves, and not without persecuting them mightily.  Not everyone will be taken up in this Light.  Jesus foresaw it accurately: “ Two are in the bed and one is taken; two are in the field...five are in the household, two against three and three against two; father against son. Those without consciousness of the Child will not know which of the senses to believe, not who in the world is telling the truth.  Those who have found the Child within won’t care what the theologians or philosophers think.  We leap through Spirit’s door and leave the flaming house behind.

WHY THE DUAL APPEARING OF IDENTITY?

"Ojai Sunset"  by Sandy Jones

Here is an excerpt from "The Child Within Us Lives! A Synthesis of Science, Religion and Metaphysics" By William Samuel

WHY THE DUAL APPEARING OF IDENTITY?

Why does Identity appear dual in nature? That is, why the “real” Identity and the facsimile who struggles with ego and the like? Why the Real and the one in the world that fools us so? Why the one atop Da Shan and the other on the slopes? If God is All in all and omnipotent, why not one identity to start with, pure, perfect, made in the image of God? Why the second man, made of the elements of the earth? Religion stopped trying to answer this question in the first century of Christianity. Metaphysics has given no practical answer whatever. The body of this book will answer that ancient enigma to the satisfaction of scientist and philosopher alike.

First, understand that the Genuine Identity, the soul of us, the Child of us, is that one atop the Mountain, unbound by time and space, residing in the heart of Godhead beyond Name and, simultaneously, everywhere on Da Shan—not unlike the simple photon which, moving at the speed of light, is virtually everywhere in space nearly simultaneously. That is the genuine (and only) Identity (Image of God-Self) as God made it.

Our time on Da Shan, perhaps many linear lifetimes—certainly nearly eleven thousand years in the present experience—is our “descent into matter” or “into hell” as it is spoken of theologically. That is, it is the time of learning via contradistinction. It is the accumulation of conscious knowledge wherein the experiences on Da Shan allow one to comprehend and fully appreciate the wonders of Ineffability and the rediscovery of the Original Identity. This embodied, human struggler is the “second” identity, the one apparently bound to time and space, destined to measure tangibility to its limits in his quest for the Original. The second identity, arising after the mist, is man's tendency to forget his birthright, moving away from God toward selfness—into ego and multiplicity. As the Tree of Life prepares to bloom and seed, there will be a universal reversal of this tendency. We find the Child still alive and untouched within us. We begin the conscious return to the Father's house, Light beyond light.

Our difficult times on Da Shan bring our appeals to Ineffability, God, for deliverance and salvation. Who doesn't turn God when he's starving or when his life is threatened? The Entity, the “angel” nearest us—beside the Ineffable, Itself—always present, ever listening to us and knowing our condition and thoughts, is the Original Child of Us, awaiting that call, eager to answer, capable of taking us through the monstrous metaphysical mazes of our own making. Our experiences on Da Shan are exactly what is necessary to bring us Knowledge, thence to exchange the personal sense, the climber's role, for the Child. Every step we make consciously up the mountain, we are less the climber and more the Child, until, atop Da Shan with the world under our feet, we have consciously “returned” to the Child of God, this time KNOWING our heritage. There, which is right here where the struggler reads these words, we encompass all the world at once (subjectively) and become the NO-PLACE, NO-THING where the Ineffable flows through to tangibility and becomes our new, subjective world; and were the world's tangible essences return to Ineffability. We become the NO-Place, NO-Thing, Way, the DOOR between Ineffability and the world. This is what Pure Life has always been, the exchange point, the midpoint between Above and Below, Outside and Inside, first and Last, Male and Female, Spirit and Matter.

It is a metaphysical folly to lay claim to Identity who isn't a climber without making the paradoxical climb in linear time.

A Letter About Love

Artwork "Wild Flowers"  By Sandy Jones

A Personal Letter about Love

From William Samuel  to Sandy Jones  - Written 1986

This letter, along with many other personal letters sent to me from William Samuel, can be found in my book "Barefoot at Heart-The Alchemy of Love and the Power of Light"  by Sandy Jones

Dear Sandy,

There are many new things to write, Sandy. They all have to do with life and love, enthusiasm and childlikeness. They have to do with simplicity and tenderness, gentleness and the fact of Already.  The new words have nothing to do with problems, or paradoxes, intellectualism or personality.

Furthermore, they are difficult to write, they are difficult to say, because the old nature of us misconstrues, distorts and attempts to turn them into something ugly. So, I hesitate.

The day is coming when these things will be listened to without so much askance  and without such violent reaction. The fact is Reality is real, Reality is perfect, Reality is all. Transcendent Reality being all there is to the consciousness presently reading these words.

One may say that at this moment consciousness seems to be filled with problems. But the believing that this is so merely gives authority to the seeming. We do not deny the seeming, we leave it, we let it alone and the power goes out of it.   If the bird appears to eat a cricket, so what? Isness still Is, Perfection is still Perfect, All is still All, this Identity being us is still God’s Self Identification and nothing we say or believe, or do not say, or fail to understand, can alter this Fact one iota.

Strange as it may seem, there is a violent reaction within us when we finally get down to Reality Itself.  You see, the old nature struggles vehemently to maintain its position. For most of us it requires a good stiff kick to alter our old opinions. But new light comes from the altered view, never from the old position.

Sandy, you are a monumental and perfect you. Because perfection Itself is being all you are.  There are many wonders in store for you and yours, as you go about the happy business of just being.

Now, you are an artist, and you will know the wisdom of running off with uninhibited, unbound feeling you see as Love. Now, it is tempered by the intellect, but Love is the leader. Hidden at the center of this feeling and barely noticed, is a sense of peace, tranquillity, serenity, a very gentle joy. It is the absence of elation the absence of discomfort. Oh but it is the transcendent presence of that which is being all sensation, all feeling.  Now when you find this center, you will be delighted, for you will know that you have found another aspect of the Infinite Identity you are.

This is the happiness that nothing can take from us.  This is the Peace that does not ebb and flow between serenity and sadness.

When next you ride up the valley where your special place is, rest for a time under one of your oaks, sit loose and feel whatever comes to be felt.  Listen, listen to the heart and you will hear it and you will be refreshed.

Who ever you think of at that time, think of love and feel the love you feel for that love is real and it is unbound and understands all things.  God the Simple Truth is Love.

Love is not fickle, love does not blow warm one day and cold the next, love is consistently Its Self.  Love, love looks and Lives.   Love understands because love is understanding, love doesn’t condemn itself or anyone else.   Love is not guilty, love is not restrictive, it’s not bound, it’s not confined or contained, love is not beholden to any institution.  All institutions exist by virtue of the fact that love Is, if indeed they exist at all. Love is not bound by the institution of marriage at all.  Its silly for any of us, whether we appear to be in that institution or out of it, or a part of it or not a part of it, it is silly to believe  that that institution is capable of providing us happiness or depriving us of happiness  -- It simply can’t do it, not really, not when we see that Love, this Identity I am has the dominion.

Love, there is only one Love, Love is love, it has no opposite.  All Love is love, human love, personal love, sexual love, are all an aspect of infinite love which cannot be bound, cannot be circumscribed, cannot be confined, love, just simple love, whether we spell it with a capital letter or not, we mean the same Love, the very same Love, the very nature of being, the one that God is -- the God that is Love, the Love that is Identity, here as I, as all.

Singleness reveals the gentle Simplicity of singleness, the mysteries answered.

I know what leads you, Sandy, and I trust you, you are important to us all. Love, Bill

Identity- Reality- Liberation

Two Plus Two Equals Reality

A short excerpt from the book Two Plus Two Equals Reality

Everyone, every single person on this earth can arrive at a precise understanding of God! How can this be so? Because God is uncomplicated and easily understood! When one lets go all the things they say about God and stops accepting them blindly as his own beliefs, God becomes remarkably apparent. And why not? What sort of God would it be that withholds Himself from all those who have not suffered enough, studied hard enough, searched diligently enough or prayed earnestly enough in just the right way? What sort of God would it be who absents Himself from those who have not been baptized in this or that fashion, or have not joined this organization or that one?  What sort of Love would it be that withholds itself from half the population of the world because it is not Christian or Muslim, because it is not acquainted with this or that arcane, unprofaned wisdom; what sort of Love withholds itself from those not subscribing to this or that set of dogmas and beliefs, not honoring this or that ritual and that ceremony?

Well, be assured, God does not withhold Himself from aught. God is right here, right now, closer than fingers and toes, closer than breathing. There is no distance nor separation between oneself and God, mentally or otherwise. You will find that God is all that is here, and “They shall all know me from the least of them to the greatest, saith the Lord.”

God's simplicity is astounding. It is this very simplicity that the pompous intellect of mankind can neither see nor understand while struggling through its jungle of erudite beliefs.

Let the beliefs go. Let what “they say” go. Drop all the old personal opinions no matter how near and dear they seem. You start anew, turning within to the heart. Then when you arrive at your own meaning of God, you happily find you are also discovering your own real Identity and its childlike simplicity.

This is not a slow process of spiritual refinement over a hot fire of personal ordeals. You do not have to wade through thousands of volumes of ancient and occult lore, to join various and sundry organizations or practice their precepts with fanatical diligence. No need to spend years doing good deeds, here a little, there a little. You might very well DO some of these things; good works are not disparaged here. But you do them, ultimately, because you enjoy them and want to—indeed, because you cannot keep from it—not because some special favor is supposed to accrue from doing them, and not because you are afraid of what might happen if you do not.

One simply does not have to delay his awakening from agony. He does not have to “put off the old man” bit by bit or “die to the self” a little every day or laboriously educate himself. One does not have to delay for any reason at all. He may drop the “old man” with all his trials and tribulations here and now if he chooses and immediately experience a joy and tranquillity beyond belief—all of this as easily and quickly as awakening from a daydream.

Reader, how easily can you withdraw from your own mental fantasy in a land of make-believe? Who snaps you out of your wool-gathering but you yourself?

When one begins to answer these questions for himself, extraordinary things start happening in his experience. Trials and tribulations slip away, one after the other. Even the most persistent pressures lose their power to disturb. One finds oneself seeing old concepts in a new and lovelier light. Suddenly, health, wealth, and happiness appear where they seemed absent before. Freedom and tranquillity blossom forth in business; love permeates every nook and cranny of experience; untoward conditions of every kind vanish like the morning mist—all because you have begun a personal determination of exactly what Truth means to you.

But let me pause a moment, lest this be misleading. The joyful occurrences in one's experience are not the GOALS at all. They are the “added things” that come from a personal determination of what God is—and they all have to do with Reality, with one’s real Identity, with who, and what God is, with who and what “I” am. Answer the question “What is Truth?” for yourself; let the attention remain here, and then, as the answer begins to occur, you will enjoy the seeming changes that take place in your day to day living quite as something “extra,” as “signs following”--yet not half so wonderful as the recognition of your honest Identity.

Remembering Childhood

"Sparkles" by Sandy Jones

Jesus said, "The person old in days won't hesitate to ask a little child seven days old about the place of life, and that person will live. For many of the first will be last, and will become a single one" (Thomas 4)

"Blessed is the person who stands at rest in the beginning. And that person will be acquainted with the end and will not taste death."  (Thomas 18 )

Another letter from William Samuel, sent to me, Sandy Jones, many years ago from his personal, private journals - which he entrusted with me, saying that I would know when the time was right to share them. Today is a good day to do just that. lheart emoticon Today is a good day for this one.

Remembering  Childhood

A personal letter from William Samuel from 1986

There is hope for us if we can recall a single happy childhood moment.  Just one, even if it isn’t complete, even if just a smattering, vague and nearly gone.  We are still children at heart.  That is, there are none of us who doesn’t remember the innocence and excitement of at least a tiny part of our early days when we bounded with innocent enthusiasm and imagination, before doubts and distrusts became a controlling factor in our formulations.  Some of us felt more of this then others, but no one is totally void of a few sweet enthusiasms of childhood.  It is essential that we recall some of them, and we can.

Perhaps we don’t remember them well, but there were days when the newborn was comforted by the feeding mother and the sounds of her voice, long before conscious  feelings, before thoughts of trust and distrust entered into anything for us.  There were those moments when we had pure, unadulterated faith in the one who cared for us because we had not yet experienced a moment of faithlessness nor even knew what such a concept meant.

Those were the days of our soul when the Divine Imprint was unimpededly present.  Those were the days of our innocence, before we knew sadness and guilt.  Those were the days of childlikeness and motivelessness when we effortlessly existed in the state to which the ancient philosophers and wise people implored us to return to.  Then, in those years when we were hungry, we fretted and cried. When we were satisfied we slept.  If there were dreams, they were of the ocean within the womb, of the rhythmic movement of our earth mother, the sounds of her heart and voice, singing, crying, laughing, the music of the Universe and angels clapping.  In those early days the morning stars sang together and we the newborn had memories of the Unspeakable Ineffable before linear time began.  In those sweet days we experienced, but we had no names for our experiences, nothing to compare them with, nothing to judge them by. The old philosopher, LaoTse, called this the time of the Ancients.  Jesus spoke of this as the Child of Seven Days.

This, the original child, is still here with us this instant as we contemplate these words.  This, the Original child, he and she, being all there is to both genders, hasn’t gone away.  It is still here right now, considering these words that are taking us back to an earlier time before Time  People don’t think of this child anymore, but one day we will again when hopelessness and helplessness return, when the clouds of poverty and death come lowering and the crickets stop singing.  Each and all of us return to this beginning.

We arrived on the human scene of the ten thousand things guided by unseen angels, driven only by the Divine Imprint which has been here with us from the Beginning of time.  We leave this arena helplessly and alone, protected only by the our faith in the invisible, unprovable Divine Imprint that carries us according to our belief through the frightening passages to the timeless and eternal Heaven from whence we came.

Happy childhood, unhappy childhood, makes no difference.  Both contain the basic elements of the first trusting child who had no occasion yet to distrust; of the original child who had no reason yet to disbelieve.  For some of us, the change happens more quickly.  Those with the unhappy childhood seem to rediscover the original state sooner than the pragmatic and those with the joyful, unchallenged times.  The grand Rediscovery and its refinement is surely, and merely, the wish to live again.

How to do this? We can believe again that there was such a time, even if it’s forgotten, because there was such a time for all of us.  We can wish to be there again consciously, though in fact we’ve never really been away just as original letter has never left the alphabet nor the number been absent from the Perfect First Principle.

------
Well, I couldn’t sleep tonight, Father, so here I am in the middle of the night trying to write of the difficult things so hard to put into words that the heart can hear.  No one in all these years has understood what I understand to be the Original Child who preceded me in to the world, and will survive when the finite one is forgotten. That Original One is the Soul of the Image of God, if I may use that word without dredging up thoughts of religion, dogma, pious organizations and their manipulated sanctimonious holy books.

And what is the soul? It is the Image of the Ineffable.  It is the qualities , characteristics and attributes which only God knows Itself to be and the mortal mind of reason and logic will never know at all.  This soul existed before ever a religion existed, before a creed or dogma made its spurious demands, before anyone had fallen from grace or become a sinful mortal with a body of flesh.

There is an eternal Imprint.  And what is that? It is the totality of all the Ineffable knows Himself to be, the image of his own characteristics and attributes as eternal and immutable as He.  The original Child of us, the soul of us, God that enormous totality, known only to God in its fullness.   But, that Image and  its qualities, characteristics and attributes are nothing of themselves.  They live and move and have their being as God’s own functioning Self-knowledge in God’s unending action of being Self-aware.
