Unpossessed Awareness

The Awareness of Self-Discovery
by William Samuel

CHAPTER 6
Unpossessed Awareness

A monumentally helpful point for metaphysicians to "get straight" is the simple, basic and very gentle fact that awareness—consciousness—is God's Self-perception in action, not the personal tool of an ego. In our work here, awareness, consciousness and life (Life) are synonymous terms. Awareness is the action of God, the activity of Mind, the Life that God is. Indeed, the consciousness presently reading these words, that perceives the scene outside, that hears the rustle of pots and pans in the kitchen and gathers in the evergreen thoughts and feelings of the Season, is the living that God is, the awareness that Mind is, the all and only perceiving of Deity going on. This consciousness right here and now is the life divine that never ends—the awareness of God.

There are not two awarenesses, one that belongs to Bill, Mary, John or world, and another somewhere afar off, marvelous and mysterious, that belongs to God. All there is to "mortal mind" is the now-to-be-discarded notion that the consciousness reading this page belongs to a finite personality with a responsibility for "his" experience. Consciousness, awareness, "seeing," "perceiving"—or whatever else it may have been called—is GOD'S responsibility and God's consciousness in action.

Conscious of what? Of all there is to be conscious of: the infinity of all that God, Reality is. THIS life we are is God's own Self-appraisal, God's Self-seeing, Self-knowing, Self-being.
Reader, listen softly: awareness and life are one. Relax for a moment and admit the simple, gentle Fact that All is all, hence the consciousness that even now surveys this printed page is the goal of the sages from time immemorial, the LIVING that God is, the Life Divine that neither begins nor ends. See this! Comprehend this! Admit this. Rest here and find old fears vanishing like morning mist before the sunshine.

————————

Our heritage is the life that Isness is. Who could want more? Who needs more? What a delight to discover that this seeing, this hearing, this feeling, this visioning, this listening, this delighting HERE AND NOW is the all and only action of God being God.

What can happen to this consciousness, the Life-I-am, the awareness I am? Naught but what can happen to God. And what can happen to Singleness, Omnipotence, Purity, Perfection? Nothing, nothing! I tell you the seeing of these words is God's eternal Self-witnessing in action, already here, already now. No wait. No struggle. No suffering. No testing or waiting through the pendulum's dark swing in order to find a measure of relief at the other end. The struggle has only to do with the fruitful, but not necessarily easy, task of letting go the old view of oneself as a possessor of life, as the grand custodian and manipulator of experience.

EXAMPLE

Look outside at the sleeping tree there. Who sees the tree? Bill or Deity? Does a body do the seeing or does awareness, consciousness, life see it? What sees the tree?
Consciousness? — or a body-centered custodian of consciousness? Where is the tree. Fifty-seven feet removed from a body-oriented ego-container of awareness, a judge who likes or dislikes what he sees? — or is the tree within awareness?  Is the seeing of the tree the activity of a separate-from-the-thing-I-see recipient-of-life, a so-many-year-old male or female pump filled organism who looks out through bloodshot eyes and answers to the name of Bill? —or could it be that it is Deity being the "seeing"? Indeed, isn't it just possible that Isness, Reality, God, is the seer "seeing" and being the seen? Could it just be that "seeing" itself is the identity "we" are? Could we be Life itself rather than the recipient of it? Indeed we can! We are!

But lordy, lordy, what this does to the old theological concept of a bestowing God. What this does to the theological view of a man born in sin, a recipient of Life—or to the oft expressed metaphysical view that Self-ignorance, via its own effort, must lift itself up to Wisdom. We awaken to find the great gulf twixt God and man has gone. God is no longer remote. We are no longer a fawning, cringing recipient of Life, worshiping a non-existent Bestower. This life right here is it. This living, this seeing, this being is the IT which God is being. "Closer than breathing," even as the prophet said.

————————

Reader, there is nothing difficult nor abstruse about this view of the universe. We shall all grow into such a view—the world shall-and it is coming rapidly. It comes gently and easily if we lower the walls and relinquish the old concept. It comes with a wall-cracking, bud-bursting blast if we insist on continuing with the wall building ego role of yore—a role that may seem personally delightful but has been a near-fiction from the first; a role apparently calculated only to give us the present wherewithal to speak with authority and be effectively about the Father's business of removing the restrictions and tending the New Garden that Now is.

We awaken with joy to find that it really has been the Father's pleasure to give the kingdom to us. We find Mind's action of Self-appraisal to be our Identity. Mind knows Itself as Itself, and this life we are is that knowing going on!
"Seeist thou this?" If so, it is time to "be'est us this" and begin to live the Millennium it is our heritage to be.

Overlooked Simplicity

Excerpt from
"The Child Within Us Lives! A Synthesis of Science, Religion and Metaphysics"
by William Samuel

CHILD EQUALS HEART EQUALS SOUL,
     THE OVERLOOKED SIMPLICITY

I have never talked heart to heart with a single person who hasn’t admitted that the child was still there within him--struggling perhaps, or a distant dream from the past, but still there.  All of us continue to dream dreams and wonder about soft things.  The heart of us still goes leaping through the high places of imagination occasionally and soars with the high flying swallows to see the far side of the moon.  That is the Child at work.  Yes, the Child still lives.

Moreover, this inner one, the old new Child of us, is healthy and well, absolutely all right in every way.  None of the enthusiasm has been dulled by the years.  Its eyesight is as sharp as an eagle’s.  Its hearing keen as a puppy’s, and all the feelings of youth are pounding with excitement exactly as they did when we were children-children, unencumbered by the world.

Much has been said about the “heart” of us.  Great theological positions have been established around “the immortal soul.”  Reader, listen with that heart of yourself for a minute.  The little child of us, the heart of us and the souls of us are the Same One. Whatever we have come to perceive with the heart has been a recognition of that eternal Child within.  And now, as I write of that One, I address the heart, the soul with which we are all concerned.  Oh, yes, the heart and soul of us--the Child--is still right here quite capable of confirming Itself, evidencing Itself and revitalizing our view of everything.

As the years pass and the world encroaches relentlessly, we lose sight of this Original Nature or Identity except as an old photograph or a memory etched somewhere in an inaccessible past.  It comes as a surprise to hear that the Original Child and all Its feelings are still around;  then it comes as a wonderment to learn first hand that they are not inaccessible at all, but still right here, closer than breathing, closer than fingers and toes.

THERE IS AN AGELESS MYSTERY IN OUR ABILITY TO FIND IDENTITY

As one reads these words about the Child, the heart knows this is the truth, a truth hidden all these years in simplicity and childlikeness that we have left behind.  When we are alone, we still play the child’s game.  While we are walking or driving or puttering with the pots, there is some little something we do in the mind’s eye exactly as we did as a child.  There are ships and ports and storms at sea when we wash the dishes or take a bath.  Don’t tell me you don’t know what I’m talking about.  Deep inside, you do.  You see, I am the child, too--the same Child--and I have become It again.  I know, by God, by the grace of God, what I’m writing about here.  And I know that the first step in feeling the joys of the Real (as we did as children) is to acknowledge that the Original Nature of us hasn’t left us.

THE HISTORIC CHRIST AND THE CHILD

Bill, are you saying that the early church substituted the historic Jesus for the Child?”

No.  Churchdom has limited  the Christ to the historic Jesus, and all of that has been done for a divine purpose the church seems to know little or nothing about.  Everything that has happened is by God’s grace.  The historic Christ-in-linear-time came, as all luminaries, to confirm our own subjective Self-discovery.  The historic Christ is the first begotten of the Father in world time, and the original believers had that straight.  The discovery of the Child within is confirmed by the Bible and its accounts of the historic Christ and his role on earth.  The Child I Am and you are “comes” to us as the second coming, as Messiah re-discovered within, for whom the Bible and Jesus are the first or external confirmation.

“Are you saying that the Child is the Christ also?

Yes! Yes!  Exactly that.  “Closer than breathing.  Exactly as the historic Christ said.  He would never leave us nor forsake us.  He has been here as the Child of us from the beginning.  Our very Child-Selfhood--which seems to go away from us and returns to us, rediscovered.

“William, tell me if this is what I’ve heard you saying these past few days:  the Child within is the same historic Christ?”

Yes, History, like all other things is subjective.  To rediscover the Child is to find what Jesus found, lived and confirmed before he began his ministry.  When the historic Christ said he would be back again, he meant that each one who understood what he was saying would find the Child within and recognize THAT SELF HIMSELF as the Messiah written in the heart, the “second coming” in actual fact.

“Are you also saying that when I was a child on earth, I was that Christ-Child?”

Yes, spiritually.  And I’m saying that everyone can prove the truth of this for himself by finding that all the acute feelings of the Original Nature which were present in us as children are capable of returning to us again.

“You know theology isn’t going to agreee with that, William?”

Perhaps neither theology nor the subjective groups, but all who feel the Child within themselves will agree, because they will KNOW it is the Truth, having proven it for themselves.  And when the theologians begin to perceive that this is indeed what is meant by the New Covenant “written in the heart,” they will slowly, grudgingly give way, even those powerful conservatives so intent on going back to Biblical literalism.  Not without argument.  Not without doubt.  Not without questioning those who have found the Child of themselves, and not without persecuting them mightily.  Not everyone will be taken up in this Light.  Jesus foresaw it accurately: “ Two are in the bed and one is taken; two are in the field...five are in the household, two against three and three against two; father against son. Those without consciousness of the Child will not know which of the senses to believe, nor who in the world is telling the truth.  Those who have found the Child within won’t care what the theologians or philosophers think.  We leap through Spirit’s door and leave the flaming house behind.

Illumination - Simple and Sublime

ILLUMINATION IS NOT A MYTH

Illumination is a Fact. We have, however, grown accustomed to thinking it must always be the other fellow, the saint or the avatar, who experiences it, not ourself. Then, we wonder why those who have awakened have gone from the scene. We think of their withdrawal to lofty ivory towers where they sit in lonely solitude.
“Illumination,” like all things sublime, creeps into the conscious awareness of the willing and childlike. It enters on kitten's feet, unannounced. It comes as the prophet said, “...here a little, there a little.”
“But how do we know when we KNOW?”

We find ourselves with the Answer.

“What is the answer?” The answers to the problems that perplex us—and others.

“Do you know the answers?”
Those that, by God's grace, I have been shown, come to know, have proven and am finally given the courage to tell about.
“How can I know you know?”
You can look for yourself at the words that are written. You can ask and see if the answer you get is applicable in your affairs—and works in your heart.
If the religionist's religion isn't doing all it has promised to do, that one hasn't found the Light behind religion.
If the subjectivist's metaphysics isn't working in his affairs, that one hasn't found the Light that underlies his subjective studies.
The fact is, in Western metaphysic's subjective textbooks, there is no general inclusion of the subject of Illumination at all. Why? The answer is painful.

A LETTER TO AN OLD FRIEND
(A summary)

Dear Mary who writes of her search for Truth,

Yes! You have been there all the while—standing on the very peak of the mountain of recognition! Since before Abraham was, Identity has been right here. Now you know for yourself that the “climb” to the mountain top of Understanding, Intelligence, Wisdom and Identity is actually confirmation. Human events are happening in reverse, so to speak, CONFIRMING the Fact of perfect Alreadyness. Those events happen “precept upon precept, here a little, there a little.”

Yes, exactly as your letter states, “Our fastest way to the top of the mountain of nearly endless seeking is to understand Identity is there in Truth ALREADY”. (“The only Way there is to BE there!”), and then our human experience begins to CONFIRM that fact. Our confirmation is inverse and comes sequentially, step by step. We see things marvelous in a twinkle, but it may take a lifetime to confirm them. On the human scene where time holds sway, this confirmation seems like the ascent of a mountain, the flow of the river to the sea, the growth of a tree from seed to seed and a return to our Original freedom. The Authority of God is confirmed for us, “line upon line,” just as you write. Originally, this is what “confirmation” meant in the eyes of the enlightened.

Mary, I delight in your letter, remembering all the times you growled at the absurdity of the world, its injustices and enigmas. Now, it is good to know you understand some of them for yourself and “have returned to the non-self atop Da Shan.” You didn't need to remind me of your “incredulous disbelief” of those early days—nor of your “endless arguments.” How could I forget them? But, as you have seen, your Self-discovery was inevitable. “At last I see It for mySelf,” you write. “Self-discovery in time is inevitable because it has already happened in timelessness.” Exactly. You state the sequence precisely. The wonder is that we could have overlooked the obvious for so long. But it didn't seem obvious at first, did it? Now we find ourselves wondering exactly as Jesus did, why the spiritual leaders and metaphysicians of the world are the last to see this mystery rather than the first.

Mary, now that the things I told you have proven themselves to be true, please listen carefully once more. Your work has just begun! There is much for you to DO in this world of appearances! For every person I have helped around the bends of the river or along the slopes of Da Shan, you will help a thousand.   Inasmuch as “those other people” are within THIS consciousness of sequentiality (time), we have arrived at the ability and obligation to address them ALL and tell them of their birthright. We do it now that we know it. We help others find it and do it, now that we can. We don't stop until everyone within us has had the opportunity to walk through the Door we find ourselves to be.

You will be given “yours” who will hear your Voice, and you will be faithful to them, giving them your Glimpses and substance, and they to you, even as you have been faithful to me and I to you. This is what we are here for, Mary, lady of the New Covenant within.

I love you!

Mary has found a measure of herself, called “Identity.” It didn't happen as she expected. It didn't happen because she did the things outlined in the textbooks and teachings of the churches and philosophic schools. Nor did Mary do it alone as seekers are wont to believe is necessary.
