Simplicity In Reality

Surely, simplicity is the profoundest of the absolutes.
Of the thoughts the world has considered, meditated upon, contemplated and pondered at length, none seems so difficult to be comprehended by the metaphysician-philosopher we play, nor more persistently disparaged and denied by our intellectual nature than the ultimate simplicity of Reality.
Yet, wherever the Light has been seen, in whatever period or culture, regardless of the former beliefs of those “within whom this Light has bloomed or upon whom it has shone,” the words that tell of it invariably speak of its availability, tenderness and transcending simplicity. Enlightenment reveals that the Real appears a mystery only to the sophisticated (dishonest) nature of us, withheld from those who would search for it outside the childlike essence of their own being.
To those who struggle for their divinity in the diverse places conditioned thinking dictates, those bewitching webs of erudition that titillate the personal ego rather than dismiss it, the Light remains forever a mystery. Oh, but it comes, it comes! The Light comes “in good measure, pressed down, shaken together, running over and put into the lap” of those who are willing to let go the vaunted self to act the simple Child of God we are in fact already.
So we see, the Light of the inexpressible demands only the sacrifice of a phantom role we play—but the surrender of anything less is the dream of darkness perpetuated.
(Reader, while this has been written in my words, it is to be read in yours.)
ABOUT READING
As all who study with us at Lollygog know, we suggest that reading be done with a tender touch. There is nothing so profound about Reality that we need be carried away with an intellectual struggle attempting to comprehend.
Wisdom is being the same consciousness that reads these words and looks outside the window at the trees moving in the wind. How intellectually profound can one be while looking into the eyes of a child? While smelling the fragrance of a flower? While soaking up the warm sunshine along a trail leading to the river bank? What is this business of analyzing, comparing, evaluating and judging? Why the flood of words to get at Truth when Truth exists without words at all? Why the volumes of hot air and print when words are but symbols of Truth in the first place?
I would tell the struggler to put his books down for a time and go out into the fresh air away from the paved streets and find a new pathway to walk, and there enjoy the now-moment. Let him take the thoughts that come from that experience—or the feelings, if no thoughts come —and ponder them for a time, rather than his books.
As we walk, we look about ourselves intently. We look at the large things—the hills, the clouds, the houses and trees. We look at the small things—the flowers, leaves, bugs, puddles, the twists and turns of the pathway and the rivulets fallen twigs make in the stream. Reader, consider all these things as you walk, ride or dream, and consider just who says anything about them is either good or bad! Ask yourself where judgment enters the picture. So the old barn is about to fall down—is that bad? Wouldn’t it be strange if it didn’t fall, the way the foundation has rotted away? And is that bad? What is wrong with old wood returning to the earth? Who says anything is bad? Who says the world is coming to an end? Nothing is ending along this beautiful pathway except the foolish and unnecessary practice of judgment! And shouldn’t personal judgment end?—especially when we see how glorious the un-judging view of the world is?
Yes, the turn from the “world” is a turn from judgment, comparison, analyzation and evaluation. The “return” to the Father’s house is a return to tender simplicity. Not a remote simplicity, but HERE! Right here, right now! Do you see this?
We end the hassle with words and the struggle to understand. We stop battling with intellectuality for a time. There is only to be Awareness in this NOW. The Identity being consciousness is continually “experiencing” the constant awareness of Truth on earth despite all that has been written to the contrary. It is a matter of letting go the judge who does NOT see perfection, for making imperfection of it. It is a matter of letting go excessive intellectuality. It is a matter of being honest and ending the attempt to be an imposter who judges everything and then reacts to those judgments as if they were the Authority.
~~~~~~~~
I would tell those who are weary of the struggle to take off their shoes and walk barefoot in a cool stream. I mean nothing symbolic here. I mean to take your leather shoes off your feet and put your pinkies into a real stream and get sand between the toes the way we did as children —the way we still do as children here at Lollygog.
I would tell the weary to sit right there on the bank and watch the minnows darting upstream— then watch the circles grow from a pebble tossed at a floating leaf. I would say to consider that leaf a moment. It is just a leaf being a leaf. There is peace and tranquillity there. It is not struggling to alter the scene around it. Neither are the reeds nearby. There is no sadness there whether we happen by or not—whether the wind blows or doesn’t.
Reader, is this too simple and naive? Intellectuality certainly thinks so—but intellectuality has failed to bring Peace; intellectuality has failed to show us Tranquillity. I tell you that this simple act of naivete, this inane and childish bit of silliness (as judged by the world) will sooth the troubled breast and open the doors of the Heart to arenas the intellect knows nothing about! We do this and then find our books saying more to us than ever before.
Well, enough about this. To write or read of it is only that. Oh, but to DO it is to return to childlikeness wherein the spirit soars and the Heart sings a new song of zestfulness.
Take a solitary stroll and see for yourself.
A Letter About Real and Unreal
Excerpt from
A Guide To Awareness and Tranquillity
by William Samuel
A LETTER ABOUT REAL AND UNREAL
Dear Paul,
  There is no "real Spiritual universe" and an "unreal material universe!" Reality—all in all and all as all—is being everything to this universe, the only universe in existence!
  The old man's action (the personality's evaluation of good and bad) gives a dualistic, real-unreal, spiritual-material, good-evil experience. Judgment has him overlook the perfection at hand to labor after knowledge of a spiritual world construed to be invisible, or somewhere else, and of course, his religion perpetuates this insanity.
  As surely as one plays the personal judge, he leaves the balanced center of Identity (in his own judge-role belief), and his experience moves out of round, wobbles and swings like a pendulum between the extremes his judgment creates. Inevitably, those seeking (desiring) the "real" find themselves more entangled than ever in their own idea of "unreal."
Conversely, surrendering this desire by "returning" to the unjudging "center" of Identity, there is a lessened drive to seek the real and a corresponding lessened involvement with an ailing, imperfect view of Existence, which, after all, is usually the reason for seeking the "real Spiritual universe" in the first place. (See the illustration of the perfect painting, page 195.)
  As we stick to the "true" Identity, to this simple, tender Awareness, refusing to play the role of judge to the best of our ability, we discover a rapid lessening of the swing between elation and depression, between ecstasy and the dark night. Soon, we reside "consciously" at the solid Center as the Center, as Tranquility, which, in reality, has been our Identity since "before Abraham was."
*******************
RETURN TO IDENTITY
Dear Anne,
  If something in your experience appears amiss to you, return at once to Identity; return to the Center-Tranquility, to the Center-Harmony, to the unjudged Here and Now wherein you know there is silent perfection and harmony; wherein you know "nothing worketh or maketh a lie"; wherein exists no need for judgments or opinions of good and evil, or correct and incorrect, "duality" or "absolute."
  Here at the center, one unchanging Identity exists: Spirit, Consciousness, Awareness. This Identity is Father-being-I, being this consciousness of existence right here and now. Here it is recognized that all the action going on, including the situation you write about, is the action of God perceiving Himself. Here it is seen that all substance is Spirit being Spirit, and no other Identity actually exists to misperceive or be misperceived. The Identity who is present "belongs" to God!
  Here at the Center of Being—simple Awareness—there is no need to judge, no need for labored thought or grinding concern for what seems necessary to correct an out-of-round appearance. Neither is there any wonder about a "cause" that makes it appear out of round. In the place of turmoil comes a simple, quiet resting in the Holy of Holies, the Secret Place of the Most High. Then, Anne, from this position of felt quiet, as Tranquility itself we look at our situation without having to cringe because of it, and we find ourselves knowing precisely what should be done, or not done, about it!
  Does this correct the situation "out there"? For those who have the courage to rest as the Heart's wholly, Holy Awareness, there come "corrections" of more than has been dreamt of!
*******************
ABOUT BETTER AND WORSE
  Ah, but mankind says NOW is not good enough. So, he leaves it, he thinks, to go scampering around in the imaginary world of not-now. Exactly so, he says this Center-Peace is not good enough. Ecstasy and elation are bound to be so much better, he believes.
  Don't believe it! They are not! It is the belief of a "better" and a "worse" that has humanity bouncing back and forth like a puppet on a string, swinging between valley and mountain, life and death, sickness and health, poverty and wealth.
  Who can convince another to stop at the NOW? To stop at Tranquility? To stop at the center called Sufficiency? Reader, it happens that Now-Tranquility and Now-Sufficiency is this Identity we are. It is time to stop desiring the positive, "good" side of the old misidentity. It is not good we want, neither wealth nor health, not even illumination. Ours is the Identity that is unjudged and unjudging. This instant—this NOW—Tranquility am I! Peace am I! Sufficiency am I! Love am I! The One Identity am I; and there is no other "I" but Isness being Itself! Here Identity stands as I!
Old Landmarks and Identity
Excerpt from
OLD LANDMARKS AND IDENTITY
  Many years ago, believing I had left the hallowed halls of theology forever to explore the loftier towers of metaphysics, I wrote a long paper on Identity. It was a hundred pages of theological and metaphysical discussion that few, if any, including myself, fully understood. Then, years later, nineteen years ago, after many Glimpses of new light, many Gordian Knots untied, retied, and untied again, I wrote of my most "absolute" discoveries and of the subjective views they permitted. That book had but a single chapter on Identity.
  Today, having found that one does not leave old landmarks but takes their wisdom with him to continually resurvey a single Scene from ever higher perspectives, I write once more of Identity—what it is, where it is, what it does, how I found it and what I learned to do with it when it was truly found.
Now I speak of Identity in a single word—Child. What I did to find Myself can be written in a simple, old/new equation. While it isn't certain how many will find the word or understand the equation, it is important that these things be written, clearly and simply, so they will be meaningful to those who are SEARCHING.
QUANTUM MAN TODAY AND THE RIVER OF LIFE
  Present civilization and its organizations (religious, philosophical, educational, scientific, financial) are like the great bend in the river of life just before the shallows ahead—just before the unsuspected turbulence of subjectivism when life roars through the narrow passages. Historic education—religious education in particular—has paid little attention to its prophets. It has deemed subjectivism too unsettling and difficult to teach. Our temptation is to hang on to the old ways where few demands are made and the familiar pacifies us. But the River of Life is moving relentlessly in growing, ongoing information, and the River of Life includes the rapids of metaphysical subjectivism whether churchdom and science want to examine it and tell of it or not. As content as we might be in our religious views—or in avoiding spiritual matters altogether as so many do—the end of the quiet time looms for everyone. We are approaching a New View of things. The world is already caught in the swift flow of quantum information leading to new knowledge and strange, startling vistas.
  For the new perspectives being thrust upon us, neither the objective studies of religion nor the subjective studies of metaphysics, as they are presented today, will be adequate. The tumult we are already facing insists that mankind, if he is to survive, begin to think in a new way. Humanity, with its physical sciences leading, is soon to confirm the insubstantial nature of matter and time.
PROUD SCIENTISTS AND METAPHYSICIANS
  Even beyond the turbulence of subjectivism, there are sticking places where physical scientists and metaphysicians are loitering along the banks, wading in the shallows of arrogance and self-superiority. In this world of appearances, metaphysicians wax, wane and suffer no less than anyone else and, in the end, they find their brands of subjectivism inadequately meeting their own needs, much less the needs of the world. Caught in the sterile void of "absoluteness," the suffering subjectivist faces an awful anguish and wonders why his metaphysics does not work as it did in the beginning, why his organizations languish and why there are no more answers now than a hundred years ago. This book is for the metaphysician, the physicist and astronomer who want more Light—and the answers to those questions.
  Once I wrote of the chemical insanity that would smash the world—and it did. Now I speak of a new madness in the name of pseudo-metaphysics to shake the world, wherein much of mankind will find its faith in everything shattered, unable to find God's good in anything, anywhere, outside himself. Completely unaware of it, the bastions of legitimate subjectivism face an attack from every quarter by an insecure and threatened "religion," in the NAME of religion which isn't working either. The only ones who won't be conquered in the melee already begun, objectivist and subjectivist alike, will be those who have moved onward in their studies to FIND the Light of the Child within themselves and follow Its leadings rather than the world's.
Simplicity
  From out of the complexity of pure science and absolute metaphysics come the most marvelous SIMPLICITIES. For me, metaphysical absoluteness was apparently necessary to break out into Knowing. I don't know if it is necessary for my “others” to struggle as I did, but others don't need to suffer in those same areas if they will BELIEVE the Simplicities I've found and then make them their own; that is, if they will put them to the test and live them for themselves.
  Those Glimpses that come with contemplation, meditation, study—or on the gently evening breeze—are the Spirit of the Unknowable. They are the Word that “proceedest from the mouth of the Lord,” as it is put in Biblical language. They are essential for our inner growth and awakening. Whatever we actually need in this human scheme of things begins with those blips of inner light. Not the glimpses other people have, but the ones we have for ourselves. Those Glimpses “come from” the Center of Ourself, from the Child, the real Identity of us, “he who was before he came into being.”
ABOUT OUR NEEDS IN THE WORLD
Suppose the country rose thinks it needs a certain chemical. It meditates and prays and listens to the revivalists on the wind, but when the sun breaks through, the sunshine brings what is necessary to help the plant absorb all needed chemicals—and do all things else for the plant's ongoingness—things of which the plant has no conscious knowledge.
  Let us get this straight. The Glimpses of Truth are the most meaningful things in our affairs. They come with whatever we actually need for the long haul in time and space, if not for the moment—and they come with whatever the physical body of us needs whether we are conscious of the need or not. When the Glimpse comes, “healing” that we aren't yet capable of recognizing is happening, albeit not necessarily the healing we humanly want.
  Now hear this too. We don't sit about and wait until we need the Light of Life until we act in this human scene of things. That's pretty much the way the world does it. Rather, we keep doing those things necessary to see the Light of Life in our affairs; we keep at the work of living the simple Equation (Truth) as a gardener keeps at his work—and our garden prospers in the Light.
Not long ago, a lady was here and I asked if she felt she had made spiritual progress during the past year. She said, “Definitely not. I've made no progress at all, spiritual or otherwise. My life is falling apart and that's why I'm here.” She said she couldn't remember the last time she had had a moment of insight.
  The world's disintegration has already set in if we're not regularly catching more Glimpses of Truth. If we haven't perceived one in recent days. We're headed for human trouble.
  But to have glimpses of Truth regularly does not mean that one lives forever without an apparent decline of the body in the passage of years. If the Glimpses are still coming, we are laying up Treasures where moth doth not corrupt and our worldly affairs do not turn into an anchor around our necks. If new insights are not coming, we're headed in the wrong direction. If they are coming, we savor them, examine them and remember them in the greatest possible detail. That's why we keep the journal. The Light of the glimpse is bringing so much MORE than we think we need.
ANOTHER NIGHT AROUND THE CAMPFIRE
  What heals? The glimpse of Light. What does the good work? The Light. No difference between the glimpses and glimmers and no matter if they are spelled with a capital or not. What do I do when someone comes to me for help? I give him one of my glimpses and tell him to give one of his to someone else. If he HEARS mine and gives one of his own, he moves toward tangible health that moment, and both of us soon have more glimpses to give! That is a significant part of the grand Equation—a Simplicity beyond words. And it WORKS wonders greater that I can tell. It does MORE than simply “heal” this or that. It benefits the entire WORLD.
How is it possible for a glimpse of Truth here on the river bank to do such an enormous thing as help all mankind? It is possible because the world and all mankind are subjective, WITHIN this Awareness we are. We are given dominion over that subjective world that we have come to understand, find guiltless, loose and let go. This world is ours to TEND as surely as a gardener tends his flowers. Our garden needs a continuing flow of Light and that Light comes as our inflowing bits and pieces of insight. We are to GIVE those Glimpses to our world as we receive them, live them, comprehend and confirm them. This is part of the Mystery of the Equation.
No one in metaphysics has written of the Child yet, or the Equation and its Balance. I may never publish these words, but at the moment it appears that task has been given me to do—just because, finally, humanity is on the edge of a willingness to understand what lies beyond intellectualism. Mankind really wants to know how to live his intellectualism intelligently without destroying civilization in the process.
Metaphysicians have nothing in their literature about the Child or the Equations. Metaphysics includes the Child's way to think—subjectively—but very little about the Child's way to live and act for mankind. In these final days of our human experience, it is essential that we get acquainted with the rest of these three marvels.
THERE IS A TRUE MEASURE OF PROGRESS AND SUCCESS
  The only measure of real success in all the world is whether or not one is coming to perceive more truth. No one knows this better than we do—each of us individually—and we know whether or not we've had new light in recent days. No one else can tell us more about this personal progress than we can tell ourselves. It is our own inmost business. But, if we haven't been seeing ever more light, we haven't been making progress, and we are sinking into the quagmire of Da Shan.
  Once we've recognized a Glimpse for what it is, the Child within knows there are more glimpses to be seen, experienced, lived and celebrated. More, we know those Glimpses offer new perspectives of old views. They tell us more nearly how things really are. They brighten and enliven our affairs. But most of all, those Glimpses come with healing on their wings, reviving the Child within.
  With each bit of Light we are more the Child and less the climber.
  Gentle listener, this this is what you have come here for. There is something one can do to begin having those wonderful glimpses of Truth again! We will talk about that around tomorrow's campfire.
